Wedding Cake Frosting: White Fondant, Chocolate Frosting, White Chocolate Buttercream And Key Lime Pie Frosting

When a newly married couple happily eats the first slices of their wedding cake, frosting is probably the last thing on their minds. But the baker of the cake most likely spent a good deal of time deciding which wedding cake frosting to use. The two main wedding cake frosting choices traditionally used for most wedding cakes are fondant and buttercream.
Buttercream frosting is the most popular type of wedding cake frosting because it is light, simple to make, and delicious.
Buttercream frosting boasts a sweet and buttery flavor. It is fluffy and soft, which makes it great for decorating; it can easily be piped for borders, writing, or other decorations such as flowers.
Many different flavors of buttercream exist, proving once again why it remains a standard wedding cake frosting. Popular types of buttercream used for wedding cake frosting are chocolate buttercream, white chocolate buttercream, and key lime pie buttercream. These many flavors of buttercream wedding cake frosting can be used as filling or as icing. In addition, by adding food coloring a baker may also produce any color of frosting he or she wishes.
The only downside to buttercream wedding cake frosting is that it does not hold up well in warmer weather. When the temperature increases, it may melt and lose its shape. Fondant tastes rich, is not very sweet, and its consistency is more dough-like than the consistency of buttercream. Fondant frosting is long-lasting. It can be stored for up to two months when in an airtight container. Like buttercream, fondant will soften in warmer weather, however, it will not melt. This attribute makes this wedding cake frosting ideal for outdoor events. But fondant frosting should not be applied directly to the cake. Instead, the cake should first be covered with an apricot glaze, buttercream frosting, or marzipan. Fondant wedding cake frosting, when originally prepared, yields a white color. Upon adding food coloring, however, the frosting can produce any color from pastels to deep colors.
Applying fondant frosting onto wedding cakes in the shape of roses, ribbons, and other decorations takes longer than it would if just using buttercream. Because of the extra preparation time in creating extravagant shapes, fondant cakes cost more than cakes decorated with only buttercream. In fact, fondant frosting wedding cakes are typically the most expensive out of all wedding cakes. The more detailed the decorations on the cake, the more expensive the cake will be. Although buttercream tastes sweeter, fondant provides a more professional look. A basic three-tiered wedding cake with buttercream frosting is usually priced at about $150.
